Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, called NSAIDs, are usually the first-line treatment for back pain. In generally, all NSAIDS seem to be equally effective at relieving back pain when administered at equivalent doses. However, some medications may work better for some people. The analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of NSAIDS are most likely to benefit the patient during the first week following the injury. Here’s a guide to using NSAIDS for back pain to get the best relief possible.

To maximize the anti-inflammatory effect of the NSAID at managing your back pain, a loading dose should be administered followed by a series of recommended doses administered at regular intervals. This means that a higher dose should be administered initially and a maintenance dose should be administered at intervals. This method of administration allows the therapeutic dose of the drug to be reached sooner and decreases the amount of time before the beneficial effects are felt. Extended use of anti-inflammatory drugs is associated with adverse reactions, and the use of these drugs for longer than 3 to 4 weeks in the treatment of back pain is not recommended.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) have analgesic and antipyretic (temperature lowering) properties. In higher doses, NSAIDS also have anti-inflammatory effects. NSAIDS are non-narcotic drugs. Many of these drugs are available without prescription. There are many types of NSAIDs, including aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. Acetaminophen (also called paracetamol) is used in Tylenol. Although this drug may be classified as an NSAID, some experts not considered acetaminophen to be a true NSAID as it has very weak ant-inflammatory properties. Acetominophen toxicity is a leading cause of liver failure.

Although NSADS are considered to be relatively safe for the treatment of back pain, they can produce adverse effects. NSAIDS may cause adverse reactions, particularly involving the gastrointestinal tract and the kidneys. The adverse effects of NSAIDS are related to the dose. Approximately 10 to 20% of individuals taking NSAIDS experience dyspepsia. NSAIDS may cause ulcer perforation and bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract. NSAID use can lead to serious conditions requiring hospitalization. It has been estimated that 100,000 individuals per year require hospitalization due to upper gastrointestinal disorders resulting from NSAID use. NSAIDS can even cause death. Side effects usually occur within the first few weeks of use. Adverse reactions involving the gastrointestinal tract may develop later. The use of more than one type of NSAID should be avoided as the risk of side effects is additive. It has been suggested that NSAIDS are often taken unnecessarily.

Although it is not common, NSAIDS may cause an allergic reaction. Symptoms of allergic reaction include hives, facial swelling, airway swelling, and breathing difficulties. An individual experience these symptoms should immediately seek medical attention. Allergic reactions to NSAIDS are more likely to occur in individuals with asthma.

There are advantages to the use of NSAIDS for back pain. The drugs are relatively inexpensive and many can be bought over-the-counter without a prescription. The drugs are safe if not abused and are available in different strengths. The drugs also come in different forms (e.g., tablets and capsules). NSAIDS are not addictive. They do not interfere with the functioning of the respiratory tract and are not sedating. NSAIDS do not contain steroidal agents.

If you’re interested in alternative approaches to relieving a sore back, you might want to consider using TENS for back pain. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a treatment for pain control in which an electrical current is applied through the skin. The TENS unit generates the electrical current. The electric current is delivered through electrodes placed on the skin. The power unit can modulate frequency and intensity of the electrical current. It can be administered at high frequency and low intensity (motor contractions are not produced) or low frequency and high intensity (motor contraction are produced).

The TENS device is generally small enough to clip to a belt. The device is comprised of a power unit run by a 9 volt battery, wires, and electrodes. Controls on the power unit allow adjustments to the frequency, intensity, and duration of the current.

TENS administers low levels of electricity to the nerve endings under the skin. Although TENS is often administered to treat back pain, there is no evidence to show that the technique produces beneficial results. Many individuals with backaches report that the treatment relieves pain. However, not all individuals who have undergone TENS for back pain report satisfaction.

TENS devices are used by physiotherapists, and there are units available for home use. When used at home, the patient follows the instructions of a health care professional. Trial and error may be used to determine the best settings for an individual patient. The frequency, intensity and duration can be varied within certain limits set by a physician or trained operator. A TENS session typically lasts 45 minutes. Frequent session seem to improve results. The device should not be used without the approval of a physician.

TENS is used to treat many conditions apart from back pain. It may be used to treat the pain and muscle spasms that accompany vertebral fracture. TENS may also be used to treat spinal cord trauma, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), sciatica (inflammation of the sciatic nerve), a slipped disk, and rheumatoid arthritis.

It is not known how TENS acts to relieve back pain. It has been suggested that it acts by preventing the transmission of pain impulses to the brain. However, the TENS unit must be used correctly. If the device is set to too high an intensity, it can facilitate pain transmission and increase pain. It has also been suggested that the electrical impulses delivered by the TENS unit may stimulate the body to produce chemicals, such as endorphins, that relieve pain. TENS has also been hypothesized to inhibit overactive nerves, improve blood flow, re-establish disrupted nerve pathways, and increase muscle strength. If TENS does work for a particular individual, beneficial results may be apparent immediately or not for 3 or 4 months.

There are some advantages to using TENS for back pain. The patient may use the device at home under the supervision of trained personnel. The device can be rented or purchased. The cost of the device may be covered by insurance if its use is recommended by a physician. The treatment produces few side effects. The treatment may be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments.

TENS should not be used by individuals with the following conditions: implants (such as pacemakers and spinal cord stimulators), certain heart conditions, and epilepsy. It should not be used by pregnant women. The device should not be used over the throat or over the carotid sinus (a large blood vessels located below the jaw).

Pampering yourself at a spa is considered more and more these days a necessity. For those who have issues with back pain, a good massage may be just what the doctor ordered. Massage is an alternative therapy that can bring relief for many who suffer from pain in the back.

There are different types of massage therapy but the basic tenet is the same. Through massage, pressure is applied to the body in various ways (knuckles, palms, chops, fingers) and through different media (oils, stones, cups, balls). The goal is manipulation of the soft tissues of the back to promote better health and pain relief.

The ancient practice of massage therapy goes back thousands of years. In India and the Orient, the idea is to release the energy that is trapped in parts of the body through some sort of injury or stress so the body is free to heal itself. This energy is referred to as “Chi”.

Benefits of Massage Therapy

When you are suffering with chronic pain, massage therapy can be an alternative to surgery for back pain. Doctors usually consider surgery a last resort, but many fortunate people avoid surgery all together with the use of massage therapy. Here are some of the benefits of massage therapy:

Reduce stress

Increase flexibility

Reduce blood pressure

Alleviate many types of back pain

Increase range of motion

Reduce cramps and spasms

Improved blood circulation in muscles

Types of Massage Therapy

There are many different types of massage therapy. Choosing the right one will take a bit of experimenting, but any reputable massage professional will walk you through the proper method for your particular back pain.

1. Swedish massage – Involves long strokes with the hands. Ideal for increasing blood flow to the muscles, increasing circulation, reducing toxins in the muscles and increasing flexibility.

2. Hot Stone massage – This therapy uses heat to relax the muscles and balance the energy centers of the body. Stones are used on the back and thighs and massage is carried out with them using light pressure.

3. Deep tissue massage – Be warned. This type of massage may leave you sore after the first time. However, it may be no worse than what you are already experiencing. Massage is conducted against the muscle grain to get deep into the tissues. Make sure you talk to your massage professional about your pain tolerance before beginning and make it clear that you have the ultimate say in whether or not the massage feels alright.

4. Thai massage – This massage is designed to lengthen and strengthen the body. It improves range of motion, flexibility and improves posture. Poor posture is one of the causes of back pain.

Massage therapy can be of great benefit to your entire body, especially your back. Choose a licensed massage professional who is well-versed in the type of massage that you choose to alleviate your back pain. Have a good conversation before you begin about what you can expect from the massage, then lay back and enjoy!

If you are suffering from back pain, you likely have tried all sorts of strategies to relieve the pain and misery. You might also be feeling helpless if nothing has worked. If so, it might be time to choose another path – the age old practice of acupuncture.

What comes to mind when you think about acupuncture? There was a time when the procedure of acupuncture was shrouded in mystery and only discussed in whispers. The whole idea and mental image of acupuncture was simply too frightening for most people to consider. So is acupuncture indeed a mystical, torturous procedure? Certainly not. In fact, this particular form of ancient medicine has stood the test of time, having been practiced for thousands of years with great success. Acupuncture is able to treat a number of health conditions, from migraines to back pain.

According to practitioners of this ancient art, energy (chi) travels throughout the body along paths referred to as meridians. When someone is experiencing back pain, it is believed that an energy conduit is obstructed. This hinders the circulation of blood and results in stagnation in the tissues, ultimately causing a build-up of toxins.

Acupuncture consists of the strategic insertion of exceptionally fine needles that are only as thick as a strand of hair, with the aim of unblocking the paths of energy. Acupuncturists study meridian maps to help them identify where to insert the needles in order to re-establish the energy flow. The process also encourages toxic substances to flee the body by means of the lymphatic system. Once chi is restored, back pain will be gone. The muscles in the back will loosen up and the spasms will settle down.

As with any type of medical procedure, it’s important that you do some research and not just pick the first acupuncturist in the yellow pages. Look for a highly regarded, licensed practitioner. Before undergoing treatment, discuss your history of back pain and any medications you are taking, and also any allergies you may have. Your acupuncturist should alert you to any potential risks, regardless of how minor. In all cases, there is a possibility of bleeding, tenderness or pain at the site of insertion.

Before the treatment starts, you will be covered by a gown or towels. You will most likely be asked to lie down on a comfortable table. Advise the practitioner if you feel any pain or discomfort. However, most people don’t feel a thing as the needles are inserted. Nowadays, the tools used for acupuncture are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and all needles are hygienic and used just once before being discarded.

Following the procedure, there are those who feel energized immediately. On the other hand, it could take several treatments for you to get complete results. For those who are experiencing extreme pain prior to the procedure, heat may be applied to the affected region to enhance the healing process.

Acupuncture is classified as an alternative therapy for back pain, and it’s fast becoming one of the most popular non-traditional treatments in this regard. If you are unhappy with the outcome of other forms of treatment, this age old practice might be the ideal solution to easing your back problems for good.

We’ve all watched those old TV shows or movies where girls are sent to finishing school to get “refined.” They walk around with books on their head while a woman with a tight chignon and even tighter pursed lips follows behind with a conductor’s wand. Those books perched on the head were meant to improve the debutante’s posture. Because poor posture could be causing your back pain, are these old “posture perfect” methods worth a second look? Perhaps.

The spine has a natural curve in it, designed to help us move and bend and flex. Muscles support the spine, allowing us to do all that moving and bending and flexing with ease.

It is interesting that most of us don’t know what proper posture really is. When we stand in line, we will lean to one side or back against the wall. At work, we are hunched over the computer or have the telephone pinched between our neck and shoulder. And, let’s not get started with how we sleep. Proper posture or “alignment” is largely forgotten or was never known by many people.

Let’s go back to finishing school shall we? If you are having back pain on a chronic basis, take stock of how you stand, sit, lay and bend throughout the day. These movements could be contributing to the pain in your back, neck, shoulders, hips, and legs.

Here’s what happens when the body is out of alignment. The muscles are stretched and contorted to accommodate an unnatural position; unnatural to your body, that is. It is that stretching and contortion that causes the first signs of back pain. Over time, your muscles start to knot up, or even spasm, under the strain. Long term muscle stretching and contortions can result in long term muscle disfigurement, meaning long term pain.

Here are a few ways to improve your posture and alleviate that back pain before it becomes a more serious problem.

1. Get new shoes – Many of us wear our shoes unevenly and don’t even know it. If we were to try and stand level on a board we would be listing to one side or the other. Our bodies are out of alignment. Choose shoes that have built in arches and a shock-absorbing sole.

2. Revamp your workspace – Systems of office furniture have been developed to deal with posture and alignment. These systems are often referred to as ergonomic designs. There are chairs, computer keyboards, phone attachments, and more, that are designed to keep your posture aligned perfectly. Invest in these systems for a healthy back – and increased efficiency, as it’s hard to be productive when you’re in pain.

3. Change your mattress – Do you wake up with back pain? It could be a lumpy, uneven, or worn out mattress at fault. Some of the new “adjustable” mattresses allow you to tailor it to your needs and body type. There are others that are made with memory foam to conform to your body shape. Don’t forget the pillow. There are pillows that are specially designed to cradle the head in such a way that the spine is kept perfectly aligned throughout the night.

4. Take a lesson from finishing school – Simply being aware of how you are walking, standing, and sitting will be a start in correcting your posture. As you sit at your desk, set a timer to remind yourself every three to five minutes to sit up straight. Many of us round our shoulders over the keyboard. This timer going off will, over time, make us more aware of our proper posture. When standing, pull in your abdomen. This not only makes you look better, but the abdomen helps support the back, reducing back pain almost immediately and training the abdomen to give the back a little assist. And, yes, pretend you have a book on top of your head when you’re walking. Chin up, level steps, uplifted chest, and straight back will carry the invisible book beautifully.

With lessons learned from finishing school and a few tricks and tools to help you improve your posture, you could start to notice that back pain lessen, even disappear. Evaluate your body alignment and use these “perfect posture” recommendations to resolve your back pain issues and enjoy better all around health.

Just about everyone can agree; when your back hurts, your world seems to come to a screeching halt. It affects everything that you do from that point on. You can put a broken arm in a sling. You can’t put your back in a sling and continue with your day. It’s important that you find the correct cause of your back pain: is it back strain or a herniated disc?

Back Strain = Back Pain

Let’s begin with the simplest form of back pain. That would be back strain. This occurs when you strain the muscles that support the spine in the back.

What does it feel like? Think of a “charley horse” in your leg. The muscle knots up because it was stretched the wrong way or over extended. The pain is immediate and continues until you can work out the kinks.

With back strain, you have essentially done the same thing. That muscle is out of sorts and needs to relax and heal. Let’s consider what could be the cause of your back strain:

Sudden jerky movements

Improper lifting posture

Poor sitting posture (slouching or hunching over)

Injury

Obesity

Stress

Shoes that are wearing unevenly

Dehydration (your back needs water too)

When the muscles of the back are constantly strained, strengthening them may be the key to helping with back strain and inevitable pain.

Herniated Disc = Back Injury

However, back pain can also be the result of a structural problem. This occurs when an injury to the back involves the vertebrae, nerves, and discs. This injury may be a trauma to the back, known as “an acute” injury, or an injury over time, known as “a chronic” injury. One of the most common injuries involves the discs.

The discs are located between the vertebrae of the back. They serve to cushion the nerves and the bones. When a disc is herniated, the inner spongy matter squeezes out through the outer layer. This puts pressure on the root of the nerve that arises from that spot on the spinal cord. Usually, herniated discs are found in the lumbar region of the spinal column which corresponds to the lower back.

Herniated discs can be the result of an acute injury, a chronic injury such as a repeated motion that wears down the disc over time, or as a result of what is known as degenerative disc disease.

The worn disc spills its spongy material out and the disc “herniates.” The material can begin to rub against nerves causing further pain.

Typically with this type of injury, what you will notice is pain in the hips and down the legs, commonly known as sciatica. Those nerves are pinched and can cause a loss of feeling in the legs from time to time. Your leg could have the sensation of “giving out” which is disconcerting as you are actually unable to move your leg for a time.

Anytime you experience unexplained pain in your back or down your legs, especially repeatedly or over a period of time, you should consult a health professional. The only way to know if your back pain is more than the occasional pain from overuse is to have the proper tests. Taking a few pain killers to alleviate minor back pain that occurs once in a while may be alright; say, when you rake the yard. But, serious back pain requires serious attention from a doctor. Take care of your back and it will take care of you!

Back stretches are very important for your overall health, and help to not only relieve back pain but even prevent it from even happening to begin with. If you want to learn more about back stretching, whether you want to focus on upper or lower back stretching, the best thing you can do is learn about a few back stretches and how to perform them.

Of all the different back stretching exercises that you can perform, here are a few of the very best and which you will find most effective if you are one of the millions of people out there who are presently dealing with back pain.

Just remember that back stretches need to be specific to each area of the spine, and there is a stretch however that stretches the entire length of the spine and is ideal if your back is less specific.

Stretches

For one of the most effective back stretching exercises you want to have your feet planted firmly about 18” apart and then rotate your head and shoulders to the left as far as you can until you feel a slight bit of tension. Make sure that you do not push too far because if you do you can end up seriously injuring yourself. Hold this for a few seconds then slowly twist in the opposite direction and hold for a few more seconds.

Those few seconds that you hold are what is giving your brain repeated signals of the normal and maximum allowed for muscle tension.

Here is another of the best back stretching exercises that you can do. To complete it you need to start by standing or kneeling on the floor with your hands on your hips. Then you need to slowly arch the lower back and stick out your chest while slightly leaning backwards, and a comfortable stretch should be felt in the lower and mid back area. Hold this position for a count of about ten seconds.

These are just a couple of ideas of the various stretches that are effective for the back and which you will want to try out. If you want to have the best results of all, you may want to seek help from a personal trainer who will be able to show you stretches that are going to be best suited to you and your needs and not only that but ensure that you are performing them correctly.

When you are living with chronic back pain you will sometimes try avenues of chronic back pain relief that you would not normally try if you did not have the back pain. For things like chronic neck back pain or severe lower back pain people will turn to some unconventional sources of chronic back pain relief to try and buy themselves just a few hours of relief from that sharp pain. Some of these different methods of chronic back pain relief really have a chance of working while others have a track record of not being as successful.

The important thing for the person living with chronic back pain is to remember that trying an unconventional, natural back pain relief methods usually cannot hurt as long as the person administering the treatment is a qualified practitioner. It is always a bad idea to let someone without qualifications try and offer you chronic back pain relief. So always check to make sure that the person offering you a cure for back pain is certified in some way to treat your condition.

Probably the most effective form of chronic back pain relief that is considered unconventional is going to see a chiropractor. A properly trained and certified chiropractor can offer solutions for your back pain that can most definitely lead to temporary chronic back pain relief. Just remember that the chiropractor is not offering you permanent relief regardless of what they may tell you. But someone that knows what they are doing can certainly offer effective temporary chronic back pain relief.

Other Forms Of Therapy That Do Work

Massage therapy is a field of therapy that has a bad reputation because of the seedy side of the term massage therapy. But a qualified massage therapist can absolutely offer chronic back pain relief for you as long as you continue to see your massage therapist on a regular basis. Ongoing treatment from a massage therapist will adjust your body to be able to deal with the pain in a more efficient way. The only warning about seeing a massage therapist is that if you decide to stop going then you will feel the negative effects of discontinuing treatment. So only start treatment with a massage therapist if you know you can stay with it and you know you will be going to your regular appointments.

Other unconventional methods of chronic back pain relief are subjective in their effectiveness. Acupuncture, for instance, seems to have as many detractors as it has supporters. But if you try enough different kinds of treatment then you will eventually find the one that works for you.

The coccyx is the area of our back that can break easily from backward falls, motorized accidents, etc, since it does not offer us balance. Connected to the coccyx or the smaller bone at the spine base is a fuse of bones that climb up the spine. The bones connect with the sacrum joints at the lower back. The sacrum connects to the hipbone and forms into the pelvis joining the lower region and iliac bones. The iliac bones are larger structures that connect to joints called sacroiliac. The sacroiliac is a fraction of the hip ilium and the joints sandwiched between the sacrum and the ilium.

In this region, millions of people are deformed, since the sacroiliac is often asymmetric. For this reason, millions of people suffer lower back pain. Sacroiliac joints can only move a unit of length equal to one thousandth of a single meter, since the joints are thicker than other joints. The sacroiliac joints give support to the arms, shoulders, trunk, and cranium in all directions. Amazing, since the joints sit low and near the pelvis and sacrum:
The joints often move in direction of the other and provide less mobility than any other joint or muscles that makes up the spine. The forces of gravity that restrain these joints increases the odds of back pain, since these joints will experience overloads of tension caused from the strain that emerges from larger lifts of the lower back and the trunk along the contractions of the upper back region. The joints are restrained also by a group of the most compelling muscles in our body, which these muscles curve over the sacroiliac. Still, the sacroiliac is our support for the cranium, which we can move in all directions because of these joints. As well, the sacroiliac controls the movement of our arms, shoulders, and trunk.

The joints can only move slightly, yet amazing the sacroiliac is our central reason that we run, walk, abruptly halt, and so on. The sacroiliac joints are flexible as well as powerful.

At the lower back, a connection meets in the area of the loins, which makes up the lumbar. The lumbar is the smaller and lower area of the back. This area makes up a small number of bones at the larger spine and sets it self apart from other elements of the back. Beneath these bones are disks. In addition, intricate tissues that connect the bones lay beneath the lumbar giving us support, since it surrounds various parts of the body and organs that consist chiefly of collagen and elastic. The connective tissues also support reticular fibers, cartilages, fatty tissues, etc. The connective tissues however do not have blood vessels or nerves that connect.

At the back are two separate spinal columns that are flanked between the disks. The spinal columns loosely fit between the surfaces of joining parts. In summary, four surfaces join slackly to corresponding spinal columns. The two columns will move smoothly, sliding transversely over the other surface. You can notice these vertebras in action while considering arch aerobics, or similar movements. The lumbar joins with spines at the curvature of the back.

Now, these areas of the spine allow us to twist, turn, move from one side to the other, and bend back or forward. The ribs do not underpin these areas, since it is higher than the lumber. This means that injuries are likely to occur from actions, such as twisting. In fact, the lumbar is holding up more weight than the average bones and joints in the vertebrae, since it must withstand over volumes of stress.

Because the lumbar lacks support from the spine, something has to become the intermediary to support the lumber and that intermediary is known as the cylindrical girdle.

When you suffer from chronic lower back pain you are always looking for new ways to get just a little relief from your condition. Many times people who suffer from chronic lower back pain are forced to deal with the condition for the rest of their lives but that does not mean that every once in a while they cannot find relief for their chronic back pain to help them forget just for a little while that they have their painful condition. Some of the chronic lower back pain relief methods are strange and others are quite ordinary and some may surprise you at how well they work. But in the end if all you are looking for is some sort of temporary relief from your chronic lower back pain then here are a few little things you can try that should help for a little while.

Obviously when you suffer from chronic lower back pain then standing can be painful after a while. Walking, running, and anything else can eventually result in severe pain and stiffness as well. Probably the most obvious relief from back pain is the direct opposite from all of this and that is simply lying down. But when you lie down to relieve chronic lower back pain you should not lie down on any old surface. To really help your chronic lower back pain you should find a surface that is firm but padded. A good stiff couch or a stiff mattress will bring you a lot of relief. Something too hard will prove to be very uncomfortable after a short while and something too soft will also prove to be painful quickly. So look for that perfectly padded but stiff surface to try and deal with your chronic lower back pain.

Light On Your Feet

One of the ways to relieve your chronic lower back pain for a short period of time that many people do not think of is swimming. You may actually want to avoid any serious swimming type activity. What really helps is being in the water and taking the pressure off your back by being able to have the water support your body. How much activity you get involved in while in the pool is up to you but like anything else to do with chronic lower back pain if you over-do it you will probably regret it.

There are some tricks to getting temporary relief from your chronic lower back pain and if you spend some time talking with your doctor chances are you will find more ways that can help give you that short period of relief that can be so sweet after struggling with the pain all day.
